Thomas Jefferson High School

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology again is among the top high schools in the country, according to the 2019 Best High Schools list released Tuesday by U.S. News and World Report.

The regional magnet school that serves students in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties, as well as the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, is ranked fourth in the new list, up from 10th in 2018. Thomas Jefferson was also ranked among the best STEM schools in the country.

Other local schools near the top nationally included Langley High School at No. 123, McLean High School at No. 127 and Oakton High School at No. 173 — all located in Fairfax County. Eight other Fairfax County high schools were in the top 1,000.

George Mason High School in Falls Church was ranked at No. 515, and Arlington’s Yorktown High School was No. 544 and Washington-Lee High School was No. 745.

Loudoun County’s nationally-ranked high schools in the top 1,000 included Stone Bridge (592), Briar Woods (611), and Broad Run (741).

Prince William County’s high schools in the top 1,000 nationally included Osbourn Park (957) and Battlefield at (966).

This year’s list included revamped rankings of 17,000 schools nationwide looking at six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rates.

“Our mission with the Best High Schools rankings has always been to educate families about the schools in their district,” said Anita Narayan, managing editor of education at U.S. News. “By evaluating more schools than ever before, the new edition expands that focus so all communities can see which schools in their area are successfully serving their students – including historically underserved populations.”
