Prince William County announces 13th high school boundary plan

Colored boundaries are the proposed changes with the opening of the 13th high school. The current boundaries are shown in blue outlines.

Prince William County Public Schools announced the first draft for boundary changes to high schools on the western side of the county to fill the new 13th high school.

The school is under construction on 83 acres in Bristow near Gainesville Middle School and Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater. It is expected to open in the fall of 2021.

Initial plans released April 23 would include pulling many of the Stonewall Jackson High School students on the western end of the school’s existing boundary, as well as students on the northern end of Patriot High School’s existing boundary. The school would also pull Gainesville students and some residents around Haymarket from Battlefield High School.

The new school should accommodate 2,557 students and employ 225 people, according to PWCS staff.

With more than 8,000 students and 45 classroom trailers among them, Battlefield High is over capacity by 46.4%, Patriot High is over capacity by 30% and Stonewall Jackson High is over capacity by 2.7%.

The division is planning to hold two community meetings to receive input on the proposed boundaries: 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at Stonewall Jackson High School’s auditorium and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at Patriot High School auditorium.

After that, the school board will hold a public hearing and will consider approving the boundaries at its meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the Kelly Leadership Center.
