Vienna long has been listed as a Tree City USA, and now the town can add the rhyming title “BEE CITY USA” to its accolades.

The Vienna Town Council on April 29 unanimously adopted a resolution that designates the town as an affiliate of BEE CITY USA,  an initiative of the Xerces Society that aims to sustain pollinators.

Vienna qualified for the designation because it has multiple pollinator gardens around town, with more planned; requires new-home builders to plant native trees; holds an annual Green Expo that highlights the value of pollinator gardens; has been named a Wildlife Habitat Community by the National Wildlife Federation; and holds a sustainability challenge for local businesses that includes a native-planting element.

Council member Carey Sienicki inquired how the resolution’s required implementation of a pollinator-friendly integrated-pest-management plan would affect town operations.

“We’re already moving away from using certain pesticides,” responded Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Herman.
