Two residents have died and 18 others have been hospitalized at a Springfield assisted living facility in the last 11 days, according to the Fairfax County Health Department.
The department is conducting an outbreak investigation at Greenspring at 7410 Spring Village Drive after 54 out of 263 residents reported becoming ill with respiratory symptoms ranging from a cough to pneumonia.
A specific cause has not yet been identified but additional tests are being done by the Virginia Department of Health and Inova Health System. While illnesses continue to occur, there have been no new hospitalizations in the past couple of days, the local health department said in a statement.
Health officials see 5-10 respiratory outbreaks a year at facilities for vulnerable, older adult populations are common, but they're far more common in the winter/flu season.
The health department said Greenspring has provided "excellent collaboration" in the investigation, and appropriate measures have been taken to reduce the risk of infection and keep residents safe, including closing the facility to new admissions, cancelling group activities, keeping ill residents in their rooms and increasing cleaning.
