5. Surprising primary defeats

Primary wins Tuesday night showed both parties are seeking new candidates for the general election ballot Nov. 5.

In the high-profile Democratic race for commonwealth's attorney in Arlington County and Falls Church, Parisa Tafti defeated incumbent Theo Stamos.

Democrat Margaret Franklin, a legislative director for a Florida congressman, won the primary in the Woodbridge District against incumbent county Supervisor Frank Principi.

On the Republican side, Paul Milde defeated incumbent Del. Bob Thomas in the primary in the House's 28th District.

4. Body found in lake

A body was found Wednesday morning in Lake Barcroft near the 6200 block of Lakeview Drive in Falls Church. Detectives were headed to the scene to investigate at 7 a.m. and no details were available.

3. Amazon makes housing donation

Amazon will donate $3 million to the Arlington Community Foundation to help support programs for affordable housing. Company officials said Tuesday that Amazon will also match employee donations through Sept. 30 to select charities that address housing and homelessness in both Seattle and the Arlington region.

2. Sunny Wednesday before rain moves in

It’ll be mostly sunny Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Rain moves in overnight and continues into Thursday morning, with a chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon.

1. Loudoun Tribune publisher pleads guilty

Brian Thomas Reynolds, 52, pleaded guilty earlier this week to charges related to defrauding investors of the Loudoun Tribune newspaper and unlawful possession of firearms by a previously convicted felon.

He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the wire fraud count and a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for the firearms count when sentenced on Sept. 13.


Johnny Mathis will be performing Saturday, June 15, at Wolf Trap’s Filene Center.
