Paul R Thompson

  • Age: 69
  • Hometown: Manassas
  • Branch of Service: U.S. Marine Corps
  • Highest rank achieved: Staff sergeant
  • Years of service: 14
  • Other details: Vietnam veteran
  • Why are you nominating him: My dad is a proud Vietnam veteran. The war really had a major negative impact on him, both mentally and emotionally when he came home from tour. To this day he tears up when thinking of the pain he and his family (his two brothers are also Vietnam vets, one lost a limb in the war) and fellow Marines went through. Being a teen and going overseas for the first time to fight in battle would traumatize anyone. Not to mention they were not welcomed home with celebrations and open arms like other soldiers. They were met with opposition and backlash from fellow Americans who protested the war. That did not and still does not stop my dad from being so proud for serving his country. As he says "Once a Marine, Always a Marine! Ooorah!"
