One of Prince William County’s newest state legislators will provide one of two Democratic responses to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

Del. Elizabeth Guzman, D-31st District, will provide the Spanish language response to the president’s annual address to Congress, scheduled for Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Congressman Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts will deliver the lead response, party leaders announced Friday.

Guzman, 44, was one of several legislators elected in a historic shift in the state’s House of Delegates. Democratic challengers in several parts of the state defeated GOP incumbents and left Republicans with just a one-seat majority.

“I am honored to have been selected alongside Congressman Kennedy to give the Democratic response to the State of the Union address,” Guzman said in a statement. “Through his rhetoric and policies, the president has marginalized members of my community who are simply trying to work hard and support their families. I look forward to standing up for all working people on Tuesday.”

An immigrant from Peru, Guzman is the first Hispanic female immigrant in the state legislature and one of the first Hispanic females, along with Del. Hala Ayala, D-51st District.

U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi called Guzman a respected advocate and community leader who represents the best of the nation’s ideals.

“Driven by her faith and her belief in the promise of the American Dream, Elizabeth has been a vital, relentless leader for the voiceless,” Pelosi said.

What a complete joke. Baby, you are in the United States. Speak english. Maybe you aren't even American.

I am an immigrant who do not speak Spanish. Should she be giving the response in the language that majority of Americans speak. She ran on the platform of inclusiveness but looks like she wants to divide.

ROBERT ARRINGTON

THANK YOU

Bill Rio

Not all Americans speak Spanish. All Americans are supposed to be able to speak English. I find her doing this divisive when she ran on the platform of "All Families"

ROBERT ARRINGTON

SHE SHOULD BE ENCOURAGING EVERYONE TO SPEAK ENGLISH

Whodat Ninja

If our next representative speaks Portuguese were going to have a hard time trying to find an interpreter :)

Whodat Ninja

Don't mind little timmy. He's prejudice.

Star Man

Oblue, you disparage an entire culture of people by implying they don't belong here (even though they're an important part of this culture whether you like it or not) and you don't see that as a racist comment? Guess you also don't think Trump's travel ban actions against entire countries or cultures aren't also racist, but they are.

Whodat Ninja

If Oblue is referring to the culture of infest, breed and demand. He is correct.

ROBERT ARRINGTON
