Dumfries woman wins $1M from lottery scratcher

Nicole Mason was sitting in her car in the car wash when she scratched her lottery ticket and learned she won the top prize in the $1 Million Series game from the Virginia Lottery.

“I started crying,” she told lottery officials. “I didn’t even let the car wash dry the car. I just drove off!”

Mason had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $561,798 before taxes, and she chose the cash option.

She bought the winning ticket at Wellington Shell, located at 10155 Hastings Drive in Manassas, according to a news release. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Now closed after Mason claimed her prize, the odds of winning the top amount in the $1 Million Series game was 1 in 1,162,800.

Prince William County reportedly received more than $51.3 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.
