Manassas landscaper wins $1 million in Powerball drawing

A Manassas landscaper is celebrating after winning $1 million in a recent Powerball drawing.

When he purchased the ticket, George Tinnell reportedly told the store clerk, “ I think I’m going to win this time."

In fact, he matched the first five numbers in the Jan. 5 drawing to win the million-dollar prize, according to a Virginia Lottery news release.

He was hanging out at home the next day with a neighbor when he checked the winning numbers. He said, “I looked at my buddy and said, ‘I just won!’”

Tinnell purchased the ticket at the Fairview Grocery at 9511 Fairview Ave. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers were 3-7-15-27-69, and the Powerball number was 19. Tinnell told lottery officials he'd been playing the first five numbers for a while.

He said he has no immediate plans for his winnings except to pay bills.

The current Powerball jackpot is $191 million. There hasn't been a jackpot winner since Dec. 26.

Lottery officials noted that Manassas schools received more than $6.8 million from state lottery revenues in the last fiscal year.
