Editor: I’ve had the privilege of living in Arlington for the past 10 years. Our past and current County Board members are, in large part, responsible for making Arlington one of the most livable counties in the United States.
This has not been by accident or a fluke. Our five board members work long and hard hours for all of us.
Strong and capable leadership is even more critical since Arlington is facing some complex issues (affordable housing, schools, transportation and transparency, to name several).
I believe that the County Board’s remuneration should be commensurate with their responsibilities and performance. Our quality of life rests in their hands, ultimately. We need to attract and retain the most qualified and effective County Board.
I would like to start by proposing a 20-percent increase in salaries – currently $60,512 for board members and $66,168 for the chair – to better align board compensation with responsibility and performance.
