Editor: In the Sun Gazette’s very thorough Oct. 10 article on the race for the 34th District House of Delegate seat, challenger Cheryl Buford is quoted as saying that Del. Kathleen Murphy “is very liberal politically.” In truth, the record shows that Del. Murphy is a common-sense moderate who is able to work across party lines to get things done.
As a member of the House Finance Committee, she has voted against every tax increase proposed during her three legislative sessions. Her record of fiscal conservatism has earned her the endorsement of key business associations such as the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce’s political-action committee, the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors and the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
On key issues of transportation, Del. Murphy is a leader in the fight to restrict tolls on Interstate 66. She is working with neighborhoods to minimize the impact of the Route 7 widening, and coordinating with state officials to minimize cut-through traffic from the Beltway. She has taken a proactive stance to meet with Maryland officials in order to convince them to provide a long-term solution to the American Legion Bridge bottleneck.
If such a track record of pragmatic leadership is liberal, then count me in. Kathleen Murphy’s style of leadership is what Northern Virginia needs.
