Jonathan Mahoney pitched three innings and struck out seven Tuesday to earn the victory in Gar-Field's 6-2 win over Patriot in both teams' season-opener.
Mahoney, Marty Neal, Marco Hurtado, and Tyler Royston combined to throw a two-hitter. Royston came in when Patriot had two on and one out in the bottom of the 7th and retired the last two batters.
Neal, a freshman and the Indians' lead-off hitter, lined a single into right field in his first high school at bat. He and Anthony Febo scored in the bottom of the first to give Gar-Field a 2-0 lead. Gar-Field (1-0) never trailed after that point.
For the Indians, Isaiah Singletary went 2-3 with a double, Neal 1-4 with a run scored, Anthony Febo 1-4 with a run scored, Jake Gulizia recorded three walks and a run scored, Tyler Royston had 1 RBI and J’aire Galloway and Nick Mont-Ros each had a walk and scored a run.
For Patriot (0-1), Nate Eikhoff reached base four times with a double and three walks.
TUSCARORA 1, HERITAGE 0: Heritage dropped a close one at cross town rival Tuscarora on Opening Day Tuesday. The Pride outhit the Huskies 5-2, but could not get runners across the plate, stranding 7 on a chilly night in Leesburg.

GAR-FIELD 3, PATRIOT 1: Mariano Moreno Jimenez, Toby Osholaya and Sammy Oyebade all scored for the host Indians Tuesday in their season opener.
Oyebade assisted on Jimenez's goal.
PATRIOT 9, GAR-FIELD 0: Ashley Pennington had two goals and two assists and Amanda Nhek had two goals and one assist to lead the Pioneers (1-0).
Abby Gardner and Shannon Blackstone also had two goals apiece, while Monica Gonzalez had one goal. Taylor Nairn had two assists.
