Monty Byers and his brother Jalen combined for 34 points Thursday to help Gar-Field High School's boys basketball team defeat host Forest Park 57-49 to capture the Cardinal District Tournament title.
With its seventh straight victory, the fourth-seeded Indians (13-11) secured a No. 1 berth and first-round bye in the Class 6 Region C Tournament. Gar-Field plays again Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in a second-round game. The victory also gave Gar-Field its first district/conference tournament title since 2013.
Second-seeded Forest Park (13-11), seeking its first district/tournament championship in the program's history, also qualified for regionals. The Bruins host a 7:30 p.m. first-round game Feb. 19 against Annandale. Forest Park had won six straight coming in.
On Thursday, Monty Byers finished with a game-high 21 points and Jalen Byers 13. Antwi Asante added nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Gar-Field led 16-9 at the end the first quarter and 32-24 at halftime. The Indians continued their recent success at the 3-point line, going 5 of 11 with Monty Byers leading the way by recording 3 of 4 3-pointers.
For Forest Park, Diego Cobb recorded 17 points, Kevin Johnson and Darryl Garib 11 each and Brandon Daniels 10. Garib tallied a game-high 11 rebounds.
NOTE: The head coaches for both schools are Gar-Field graduates. Indians head coach Jason Bell was a senior when Forest Park graduate Mak Dogbatse was a freshman.
